Oratie 13 mei 2016, De moedige onderneming. De contouren van een prospectieve ethiek.
Voorts doceert hij het vak ondernemerschap aan Science & Business Master van de Universiteit Utrecht.
Corruptiepreventie, integriteit en bedrijfsethiek staan centraal in zijn onderzoek. Hierbij spelen begrippen zoals collectieve verantwoordelijkheid en systeemdenken een centrale rol: een handeling is altijd ingebed in een sociaal systeem. Een morele beoordeling van die handeling vergt inzicht in die samenhang.
Nevenfuncties
– Lid van de ethiek commissie van Teijin. Tot voor kort was hij lid van de ethische commissie van SNS.
– Hoofdlijnmanager bij het TKI Gas (topsector Energie) met name verantwoordelijk voor het stimuleren van innovatie op het gebied van Groen Gas en de Biobased Economy.
– Lid van het bestuur van Groen Gas Nederland.
– Lid van de Commissie van Deskundigen voor de Mestwetgeving (CDM).
In 2004 was hij oprichter van MVO Nederland, hij gaf tot maart 2006 leiding aan deze organisatie.
Hij was van 1996 tot 2004 verbonden aan KPMG Ethics & Integrity Consulting en KPMG Sustainability, eerst als senior consultant en later als partner/directeur.
Johan Wempe studeerde geneeskunde (kandidaats 1973) en filosofie (afstudeerrichting Ethiek, doctoraal 1982) te Utrecht en Bedrijfskunde (afstudeerrichting Bedrijfseconomie, doctoraal 1979) te Delft.
In 1993 was hij werkzaam als gastdocent aan de George Town University te Washington.
Lector Governance Saxion, 2006-2015
Hij schreef verschillende boeken en artikelen over Bedrijfsethiek, Integriteit (o.a. The Balanced Company. A theory of Corporate Integrity, Oxford UP 2002), Governance, Duurzaamheid, Groen Gas en de Biobased economy.

CURRICULUM VITAE JOHAN WEMPE
Résumé
Prof. dr. Johan Wempe holds the Business Ethics chair at the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration (FEWEB) of the VU University Amsterdam.
He is member of the Committee of Experts on the manure legislation (Commissie van Deskundigen voor de Mestwetgeving). He is member of the board of Groen Gas Nederland (a foundation that stimulates the production of biogas) and programme leader for the Green Gas programme (TKI Gas) of the top sector Energy.
He held a chair in Governance (lector) at Saxion University and earlier a chair in Business Ethics at the Rotterdam School of Management and at Nijenrode Business University. He was programme leader of the Entrepreneurship of the Future programme at the Center for Entrepreneurship of the Utrecht University. He was a visiting research scholar at the George Town University, Washington.
Johan Wempe was founder and the first director of CSR Netherlands (MVO Nederland). He was founder and director/partner of KPMG Ethics & Integrity Consulting and of KPMG Sustainability. He was one of the initiators and chairman of the Dutch Network for Business Ethics (NBN). He was member of the Standing Committee on Bribery and Extortion of the ICC.
Johan Wempe was born in 1952, in The Hague, The Netherlands. He holds doctorate degrees in business administration (Erasmus University) and in philosophy (University of Utrecht). He received a PhD from the Erasmus University.
His research focuses on ethics in business organisations, corporate integrity, Corporate Social Responsibility, sustainability and the circular economy, corporate governance, corruption prevention.
His main interest is the role of the social system and responsibility. Individuals and organisations are embedded in (social) systems, the financial system, the chain, etc. What are the implications for the responsibility of individuals, functionaries and corporations? Another focus in his research is the development of a forward looking ethics (prospective ethics). This is for instance relevant for the debate about responsibility and climate change.
